Collaborative Environmental Planning Initiative (CEPI)

Recreational Sportfishing

Haylo was engaged by CEPI to consult on the state of the recreational sportfishery in the Bras d’Or Lakes and watersheds. Comprised of Mi’kmaq, provincial, federal and municipal agencies, CEPI recognized the importance of this opportunity within the overall management plan for the Bras d’Or Lakes.

The Bras d’Or Lakes designation as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011 reflects its recognition as a living laboratory of sustainable development, where local communities choose to protect biodiversity while fostering economic and social development. There is a great opportunity to carefully leverage the natural resources in a manner that stimulates the local economy, helping reverse the outmigration of young people from the region and encouraging more people to return.

Haylo’s extensive consultation, inclusive of a sportfising overview, freshwater species assessment, guiding and outfitter review, infrastructure review and economic assessment, has led to many exciting and encouraging recommendations that support CEPI’s mandate.
